The vice chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), Dr ARM Nur-Un-Nabi, was sued yesterday for allegedly defaming a lecturer by implicating him in an assault and halting his promotion.

Tabiur Rahman of the journalism and mass communication department filed the defamation suit with the court of Senior Chief Judicial Magistrate. The case will be heard on May 11.

The complainant said that during a protest against "corruption, mismanagement, and recklessness" of the VC on March 3, 2015, some unidentified miscreants attacked the demonstrators - students, teachers, and staff. Later police sued 200 people in this connection, and the investigation is underway till now, he said.

But the VC, during a syndicate meeting on September 18 the same year, said Tabiur was involved in the attack and halted his promotion, hence damaging his personal and professional image, he said. Asked why he filed the suit after so long, Tabiur said he had waited for his grievances to be addressed, but it did not happen, and the VC's tenure would end today.

Prof Nur-Un-Nabi denied the allegations against him.

He joined as VC on May 6,2013. H is tenure ends today.

CONFINED FOR14-HR

Two days before the end of his tenure as VC, Prof Nur-Un-Nabi had been confined for 14 hours by Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists.

The protesters demanded jobs at the university.

ABM Zahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Sadar Police Station, said BCL men led by former vice president of the university unit of the student organisation, Hadiuzzaman Hadi, confined him at his office room around 11:30am Wednesday.

Police rescued him at 1:30am yesterday.
