It has been five years, but no arrest has been made after labour leader Aminul Islam's body was found in Ghatail ofTangail.

An organiser of Bangladesh Centre for Workers Solidarity (BCWS) and president of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF) for Savar and Ashulia area, Aminul went missing after his acquaintance

Mustafizur Rahman took him out of his office in Ashulia on April 4,2012. The incident caught the attention of local and international media as the labour leader's body, bearing torture marks, was found a day later in Ghatail. According to the autopsy report, Aminul was beaten to death.

The case was initially investigated by Ghatail police and then by detectives ofTangail police.

Detective Branch of police also investigated the case before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) assumed responsibility.

On January 8, 2014,CID's Fazlul Kabir, assistant superintendent of police, pressed charge sheet mentioning only one accused — Mustafizur, who is still on the run.

The case is now under trial at Tangail Special Judge’s Court.

Aminul's wife Husne Ara Fahima told The Daily Star yesterday over phone that her husband did not have any animosity against anyone in particular, but his nature of work -standing up for the rights of oppressed workers - might have made him a target of vested quarters.

Before his death, Aminul had come home battered and bruised up after being picked up by an intelligence

agency and "police used to come searching for him," she said.

So, it is apparent that Mustafizur, as mentioned in the charge sheet, is not the only person involved in Aminul's killing.

Therefore, the investigation is flawed. Otherwise, there would have been more names in the charge sheet, said Fahima.

President of BGIWF, Babul Akhter, also echoed Fahima's claim, saying that names of the "real" killers were excluded in the charge sheet.

The lone accused, Mustafizur, worked as a source (informant) of an intelligence agency official as well as of a number of officials at Dhaka Export Processing Zone, he claimed.

So, at least three people were directly involved in the murder and the investigation would not be completed unless these individuals at these places are arrested for interrogation.

They had submitted these allegations with the CID, but the investigators did not take their allegations into account, Babul alleged.
