A Chittagong court yesterday directed the Chittagong Medical College Hospital authorities to provide psychiatric treatment to an Indian citizen who had been in jail for about three years and a half after "losing his passport" while visiting Bangladesh.

Chittagong Judicial Magistrate Hossain Tareq Reza passed the order after his lawyer lodged a petition, seeking treatment of Jalal.

The 45-year-old man from Shiliguri lost his bag bearing his passport and other necessary documents in Chandraghona Paper Mill area of Kaptai while he was on a visit on October 27,2013.

Police shown him arrested in a case for trespassing in the country after locals conveyed the matter to police. Later, he was put in prison. After knowing the matter, several lawyers led byTR Khan petitioned the court, seeking bail of Jalal. He was granted bail on February 27 in custody of the lawyer.

To send him back to his country, the lawyer already talked to the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong and deputy commissioner (DC) of Chittagong.

The lawyer, TR Khan, said in the last three years, no one testify for Jalal. His mental health condition has deteriorated as he stayed in jail for a longtime, he added.

As per law, if a foreign national intrudes into a country, police must inform it to the embassy and the DC. Later, the person can be pushed backed. But for Jalal, no rules were followed, said the lawyer.
