Development organisation Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) yesterday awarded 10 grassroots individuals for their contribution to defending human rights in the fields including eliminating child abuse, prevention ofviolence against women and domestic violence, land rights and ending child marriage.

The country needed to come forward to avert recurrence of such incidents, said the speakers at the event, held at the capital's Bangla Academy, marking Human Rights Day, observed December 10.

The recipients are: Rajeda Akhter ofTangail, Sabina Yeasmin of Dinajpur Sadar, Momeja Begum of Dinajpur district, Champa Begum of Kishoreganj, Anjoli Rani Debi of Gaibandha Sadar, Uthoin Ggay Marma of Bandarban, Fawzia Nasrin of Netrakona, Aleya Begum and Shamoli Bosu of Jhenidah Sadar and Firoza Begum of Kushtia.

"Such recognition will inspire the winners

to work with renewed energy and enthusiasm,” said rights activist Sultana Kamal.

Attending the event as the chief guest, Law Minister Anisul Huq said the government has taken various initiatives to protect people's rights including forming a national human rights commission.

MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam urged all to raise voice to defend people's rights.

Expressing gratitude for recognising her work, Anjoli Rani of Gaibandha said the award will inspire her to work with more dedication.

"If an individual cannot protect his/her rights in a society then it will stay behind," said litterateur Selina Hossain.

Jane Edmondson, head of Department for International Development in Bangladesh, and Syed Manzur Elahi, chairperson of MJF governing board, also spoke. Earlier, a cultural programme was held organised by Shurer Dhara and Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts.
