Around 27 percent general ward councillor aspirants of the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) elections are accused in different cases including murder case.

Besides, businessmen are set to dominate the polls since 90 percent councillor aspirants are businessmen, claims ShushashonerJannoyNagorik (SHUJAN).

It revealed the information at a press conference in Narayanganj Press Club yesterday after analysing the candidates' affidavits which were submitted with their nomination papers.

Seven mayoral candidates, 156 general and 38 reserved (women) councillor aspirants are contesting the polls to be held on December 22.

Ruling Awami League nominated candidate Selina Hayat Ivy annually earns Tk 11.34 lakh and BNP's candidate Shakhawat Hossain earns over Tk 8.69 lakh, while each of the rest five candidates earns below Tk 5 lakh annually, said a SHUJAN statement. Of them, Shakhawat Hossain has a loan of around Tk 5.81 lakh, it added. SHUJAN Chief Coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarker urged the government to extend its cooperation to the Election Commission for holding a free and fair election. The EC should act neutrally and enforce strict law against violation of the electoral code, said the statement with a call to deploy army, if necessary, for maintaining law and order situation.

SHUJAN also called upon ministers, MPs and other VIPs fornot joining the electoral campaign as it violates the code.

Ultimately, voters' role is the most significant. Being influenced, they should not elect criminals or corrupt persons, it viewed. The organisation will hold a dialogue among the mayoral aspirants and voters on December 17 at Narayanganj Kendriyo Shaheed Minar.
