The British Council is going to reopen its offices in Bangladesh very soon, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said.

He made the comment while talking to reporters after a meeting with the British High Commissioner in Dhaka Alison Blake at his secretariat office yesterday.

"The High Commissioner has told us that the British Council offices remain temporarily closed for internal refurbishment works, but their examinations and online activities are on. The offices will be reopened very soon," he said.

Asaduzzaman said they have already ensured adequate security measures for the British Council, and it will be beefed up further, if necessary. He said the British envoy voiced satisfaction over the foolproof security taken by the police for diplomats.

On July 27, the British Council temporarily closed its offices in Bangladesh "in order to review their security procedures".

A five-member British delegation, led by Alison Blake, met the home minister and discussed various recent issues, including terror attacks.

During the meeting Asaduzzaman said the British envoy wanted to know how Bangladesh is tackling militancy and asked whether they need any cooperation from her country.

"We have told her our law enforcement agencies are very skilled, diligent and smart, and they are working sincerely to deal with the problem."

The minister said they also told Blake that militancy is now a global problem as terror attacks are now taking place in many countries, even in the UK.

He also informed the British delegation that the people of all strata have now got united in response to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's call to resist militancy.

"Now, teachers and students of all educational institutions -- from madrasas to universities - are working against militancy."

Asked why police have taken so much time to show ex-North South University teacher Abul Hasnat Rezaul Karim and Toronto University student Tahmid Hasib Khan arrested in connection with the Gulshan cafe attack, the minister said, “Law enforcers are investigating the incident and working on it. So, one is being arrested as and when it is needed."

As his attention was drawn to the closure of some schools in Gulshan area following Holey Artisan Bakery terror attack, Asaduzzaman said they have no direction for shutting down any school there.

He said they have only taken measures for the closure of Peace Schools as per the direction of the education ministry.
