A Dhaka court yesterday placed five persons, including the wife and son of the owner of Taj Manzil, a house in the capital's Kalyanpur, on a two-day remand each for giving shelter to militants killed in a special drive in a flat of the building.

Metropolitan Magistrate Khurshid Alam granted the remand after Inspector (investigation) of Mirpur Model Police Station Md Sazzad Hossain produced them before the court, seeking 10 days' remand for each of them.

The arrestees are: the building's owner's wife Momtaj Parveen, 60, and son Mazharul Islam, 42, and Mahfujul Anfal, 27, Momin Uddin, 45, and Zakir Hossain, 40, of the area.

In yesterday's remand prayer, Sazzad, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said all the five accused impeded the law enforcers' drive, assaulted them and gave false information to them about the militants.

On August 1, Mirpur Model Police Station filed the case against the five accusing them of sheltering militants, concealing information and barring police from discharging their duties.

On July 26, nine alleged militants were killed during the special drive of the joint forces in Kalyanpur.

Following the incident, Momtaz was arrested the same day and placed on a two-day remand the following day.

Arrested on 28 July, Mazharul and the other three were taken on two days' remand the following day after being shown arrested under 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
