A newborn girl, who was abandoned by her parents at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 19, died yesterday.

Her mother was disappointed when she saw that the baby was a girl, and might have abandoned her three days after she was born, said the hospital staff.

The physicians, who had been trying to treat an abnormal narrowing in her alimentary canal, were gravely disheartened at her death, said DMCH Assistant Director (Administration) Khawaja Abdul Gafur, adding that the hospital staff grew attached to the baby in the last couple of months.

“Our pediatric surgeons conducted two

surgeries on the baby and were waiting to go for a third one. But the baby was suffering from malnutrition, making it impossible to operate on her," he said.

Due to the complexities in her alimentary canal, the baby could hardly have any milk, he said, adding the baby was being treated at the Pediatric Surgery Ward.

Hospital sources said one Monir, who had admitted the baby's mother to the hospital, was not available later while the identity of the mother could not be known.

A hospital staff also checked out the address of the baby's parents given in the register book of the hospital. But they were not found there.
