Interns at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) continued their strike for the second day yesterday. They went an indefinite strike on Tuesday protesting the attack on one of their fellows by some outsiders.

The interns yesterday submitted a memorandum to the MMCH authorities, giving a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the attackers, said Dr Abu Bakar Siddique, president of Intern Doctors' Association at MMCH.

"We will continue the strike as long as the culprits are not arrested," said Dr Siddique.

Intern Doctors' Association sources said a group of around 15 outsiders entered Ward No-13 of the hospital 15 days ago. When the on-duty doctors asked them why they entered the ward without

any reason, the group locked in an altercation with them and left the scene after threatening them, it was alleged.

The same group again entered the room on Tuesday and engaged in an altercation with Dr Mazhar over taking of tissue paper from the ward without permission. At one stage, they assaulted Dr Mazhar, said sources.

Contacted, Dr Motiur Rahman Bhuiyan, secretary of BMA Mymensingh unit, said they have already held several meetings with the hospital authorities, police administration and the interns, but the matter is yet to be resolved.

The matter will be resolved soon for the sake of the patients, hoped Dr Bhuiyan.

A case was lodged with Kotwali Police Station on Tuesday but no one was arrested as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday.
