An alleged drug peddler was injured in a "shootout" with the police in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira early yesterday.

The injured, Mansur Ali Sheikh, 45, was a resident of Chandipur village in the upazila.

However, Mansur's wife Farida Khatun claimed that her husband was a fanner and that he was picked up by the police in Shyamnagar Bus Terminal area Monday afternoon.

Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Enamul Haque said a team of police conducted a drive around 1:00am near a brick kiln at Isapur after being tipped off that a gang of drug peddlers was smuggling Yaba tablets there.

Sensing their presence, the gang members hurled brick chunks at the police. The gang also blasted homemade bombs and fired shots,forcing the law enforcers to fire back. Mansur was caught in the line of fire and got injured.
