The sudden rise of brutal murders of children reflect the culture of impunity that exists in the society and the breakdown of the rule of law, said Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Dr Mizanur Rahman yesterday.

Protests sparked all over the country after the brutal murders of Rakib and Rajon came to light.

The NHRC boss said to restore people’s faith upon the rule of law and the country's judiciary system, the culprits, irrespective of the identities, should be given exemplary punishment.

He was addressing a two-day long international conference. ASLE Bangladesh

Planning Committee and Edward M Kennedy Center organised the "International Interdisciplinary Conference on Eco-criticism, Environmental Justice and Literature” at Dhaka University.

Many influential persons think they are untouchable because of their power. They believe they are outside the reach of the law and justice, said Mizanur Rahman.

As long this kind of belief exists, such crimes will continue to occur, he added.

On the first day of the conference, 10 sessions were held.

The participants of the sessions discussed how climate change affects society and how its criticism in literature and media can save the environment from pollution.
