Vegetable trader found dead

Police recovered the body of a vegetable trader from Dighapatia area in Sadar upazila of the district yesterday. The deceased is Bashir Uddin, 42, son of Atik Rahman of Dighapatia village. Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said locals found the body floating in a pond in the area and informed the police around 9:00am. The body was sent to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. His rivals might have killed Bashir over previous enmity, said the OC.

Drug addict son kills mother

A woman was hacked to death allegedly by her drug addict son at Kartikdia village in Sadar upazila of the district on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Hasina Begum, wife of Moksed Miah of the village. Police and family sources said Hasina's stepson Faruk Sheikh, 35, used to torture her for money to buy drugs. In the evening, Faruk demanded money from Hasina. As Hasina refused to give the money, he attacked her with a sharp weapon, leaving her critically injured. She was rushed to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared her dead.

Arms peddler arrested

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested an alleged arms peddler with two foreign made pistols, seven bullets and four magazines at a mango orchard in Nalduburi area under Shibganj upazila of the district on Sunday evening. The arrestee is Mohammad Sanaullah, 40, son of Afsar Ali of Bagi Chakpara village. On secret information, a team of Rab-5 raided the area and arrested Sanaullah with the arms and bullets. He was later handed over to Shibganj Police Station, said a Rab official.

Man sued for killing wife

A man has been sued on charge of killing his wife in Pirganj upazila of the district. The victim is Mallika Begum, 40, daughter of Afsar Ali of Padmahar village. Afsar Ali filed the case with Pirganj Police Station on Sunday. According to the case statement, Moksed Ali, 60, strangled Mallika following an altercation over a trivial matter on June 26. Moksed went into hiding soon after the incident.

Lightning kills one

A farmer was killed by lightning at Chak Shimla village in Atrai upazila of Naogaon district yesterday. The deceased is Anwar Hossain, 40, son of Gul Mohammad of the village. Police and family sources said a thunderbolt struck Anwar when he was working at his farmland duringa heavy rain. He died on the spot.
