Today is the first death anniversary of Mahbubul Alam, a former caretaker government adviser and ex-editor of English daily The Independent.

He had been editor ofThe Independent for 18 years.

Mahbubul Alam started his journalism career in the mid-1950s and was deeply associated with the profession till his death, says a press release. He passed away last year at age 78.

The veteran journalist also worked as minister (press) at the Bangladesh mission in Washington DC and London and as Bangladeshi ambassador to Bhutan. He was also managing director and chief editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha. In 2006, he became an adviser to the caretaker government.

Mahbubul was also the president of the Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh for quite some time. A doa mahfil will be held at his village in Munshiganj today.
