Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) yesterday inaugurated an upgraded slaughterhouse in Mirpur-11.

The slaughterhouse now comprises facilities that produce biogas using remains of slaughtered animals, harvest rain water, and continuously check health condition of animals prior to slaughter, said officials of the city corporation.

Besides, the slaughterhouse has modem equipment for skinning cattle and preserving blood and animal waste, they added.

An official of Islamic Relief Bangladesh, a development organisation, said it is possible to kill 80 to 100 animals at the slaughterhouse every day.

Islami Relief Bangladesh upgraded the slaughterhouse with funds from Islamic Relief USA.

Rakhal Chandara Barmon, administrator of the city corporation, at the inaugural ceremony, said they have plans to build more modem slaughterhouses in the city to ensure healthy meat for residents of Dhaka.

Brig Gen AKM Masud Ahsan, chief health officer of DNCC, said they would construct a modem slaughterhouse in Mohakhali and have a plan to establish slaughterhouses in every ward under the city corporation.

He said currently there are two slaughterhouses under DNCC, including the one in Mirpur-11. The remaining one is in Mohammadpur.

There were four slaughterhouses under DNCC, but two of them - in Mirpur-2 and Gulshan - were shut down as they were in poor condition, he added.
