Thirty-three Jubo League and BCL men have been sued in the case for killing a pedestrian at Dakkhin Bazar of Beanibazar upazila headquarters under the district on Friday night.

Selim Ahmed, organising secretary of the upazila unit of Bangladesh Truck Sramik Union, filed the case with Beanibazar Police Station on Saturday night, accusing 12 named and 22 unnamed Jubo League and BCL men. Former upazila BCL president Jamal Ahmed is among the accused.

None of the accused was arrested as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. Contacted, Abul Bashar Md Badruzzaman, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Beanibazar Police Station, said the law enforcers have already

launched a drive to arrest the accused.

At an emergency meeting held in Beanibazar town yesterday, Upazila Truck Sramik Union demanded immediate arrest of the accused in the case. Otherwise, they threatened to announce a tougher agitation programme in Sylhet district. Zila Truck Sramik Union President Abu Sarker also addressed the meeting.

A 17-year-old pedestrian was shot dead and seven transport workers suffered bullet wounds as former upazila BCL leader Jamal and his accomplices opened fire in a bid to capture an auto-rickshaw stand at Dakkhin Bazar in Beanibazar upazila town on Friday night.

The deceased, Niju Ahmed, was an employee at a butcher's shop at the

bazaar. He hailed from Koshba village in the upazila.

Bullet-hit transport workers Abul Kalam, Shuaibur Rahman, Bimol Chandra Pal, Tarek Ahmed, Nurul Haque, Ripon Ahmed and Faisal Ahmed were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Locals said the issue was money, regularly collected by the stand's management committee of transport workers from vehicles stopping there.

Around 60 BCL and Jubo League men, led by former BCL leader Jamal Ahmed, arrived at the autorickshaw stand at around 10:30pm in a bid to capture the stand. They opened fire when some transport workers started hurling brick chips at them, said witnesses.
