Opener Tamim Iqbal is unlikely to take part in either of Bangladesh's unofficial practice matches at Brisbane. The move, according to the Tigers' management, is an attempt to ensure that Tamim remains fit for the official practice matches due to

begin on February 9.

The practice matches against Pakistan and Ireland in Sydney are expected to play the role of checkpoints for Tamim, who recently underwent a surgery on his left knee.

"Tamim will begin his fielding drills day after tomorrow. As of now it does not seem as though he will play in the matches against Australia XI. He is trying his best to be fit in time for the official practice matches," team manager Khaled Mahmud told The Daily Star over the phone yesterday.

Before leaving for Australia, Tamim told the media that he would try his best to play at least one match at Brisbane in order to understand the conditions.

The Tigers are scheduled to play two unofficial practice matches against Australia XI on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Australia captain Michael Clarke will feature for Australia XI on Thursday.

In December last year, a scan revealed a meniscus tear for Tamim, who went under the knife later that month.

Apart from Tamim and Anamul Haque, young Soumya Sarkar is the only other opener in the side.
