With allegations rife over cellphone use and drug trade in the country's 68 prisons, the authorities concerned have decided using two body scanners at Dhaka central and Kashimpur high security jails soon alongside luggage scanners and increasing the number of CCTV cameras in all.

Inspector General of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin yesterday also said the jails lacked specialist doctors for the jail code barred private practice.

He was addressing a press conference the prison directorate organised at its Bakshibazar office in the capital on "Kara Saptaha-2014" (prison week) ending December 29.

The week's views-exchange meetings with some 5,000 participants, mostly relatives of prisoners, raised 118 issues, said Iftekhar, adding that they were taking into consideration one over increasing visitors' time from the present 20 minutes.He said despite training inside on making a living, people were not provided jobs once released. "The attitude should change," he said, urging factory owners to employ all except murderers, traitors and militants.

Currently there are 67,199 inmates against a capacity of 34,167. Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Tipu Sultan and Additional Inspector General of Prisons Col Md Fazlul Kabir were present.
