Muggers shot a man and took away Tk 2.8 lakh from him in the capital's Rampura area yesterday afternoon.

The victim, Belayet Hossain, 50, a security officer of Bonny Apparels (Pvt) Ltd, received a bullet wound in his left thigh, and is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Syed Farid Uddin Ahmed, managing director of the garment factory, told The Daily Star that four employees were carryingTk 15 lakh, withdrawn from Janata Bank's Rampura branch, in cartons and packets from one of its offices to another to pay the salary of around300workers.

Belayet said about seven to eight men intercepted him and tried to snatch the carton away. "When I refused to hand the carton over, they shot me and took it away," he said.
