Three members of a family suffered burns as miscreants hurled a "petrol bomb" on the house of a college teacher in Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira in the early hours of yesterday.

Reasons behind the incident could not be known immediately.

Khalilur Rahman, a lecturer of Sheikh Amanullah Degree College, said he had no idea as to who could make such an attack on his wife Jharna Begum, 35, and two sons Tanvir Rahman, 12, and Asad Hosen, 7, students of class seven and one, and why.

According to local people, he has no enemy.

Khalilur, also Awami League president of Langoljhala union in the upazila, said miscreants hurled a petrol bomb on his house around 1:00am. Jharna and her two sons at the time were sleeping on a bed while Khalilur was lying

on the floor of the same room.

"Suddenly, I woke up to the sound of a bang and saw my wife, two sons burning in a fire caused by the bomb explosion," he said.

He then with the help of local people doused the fire and rushed the victims to Satkhira Sadar Hospital around 2:30am.

Maruf Hasan, a doctor at the hospital, said the victims had suffered 50 to 60 percent burns. He advised Khalilur to take the victims to the capital for better treatment.

Meanwhile, the police detained Tabibur Rahman, brother of Khalil, on suspicion of his involvement in the incident.

"We have detained Tabibur Rahman to quizz him regarding the incident," said Sheikh Abu Saleh Masud Karim, officer-in-charge of Kalaroa Police Station.

However, Khalilur told The Daily Star that he did not suspect his brother.

No case was lodged in this regard until filing of this report.

Local lawmaker Mustafa Lutfiillah visited the spot and said the attack had been premeditated as Khalilur was involved with Awami League politics.
