Police arrested a local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami along with four crude bombs from Uzirpur area in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Sunday afternoon.

The arrestee was identified as Abdul Awal, ameer of Chhatrajitpur union unit of Jamaat and son of Elias Uddin, a resident of Chandipur village of the upazila, reports UNB.

Ashiqur Rahman, officer in-charge of Shibganj Police Station, said on secret information, a team of police raided the area and arrested Abdul Awal at about 12:45 pm and recovered the bombs from his possession.

He was wanted in four cases, the OC added. A case was filed against Awal under the Explosive Substances Act.

In Meherpur, two courts yesterday sent 19 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami to jail in two separate cases filed on January this year, reports our Kushtia correspondent.

Judge of Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Mahibul Hasan sent three Jamaat leaders to jail turning down their bail petition. They are assistant secretary general of Meherpur district Jamaat, also chairman of Buripota union parishad in Sadar upazila Abdur Rouf Mukul, district unit office secretary Abdul Jabbar and Sadar upazila unit ameer Ruhul Amin.

Besides, another judge of the same court, Matiur Rahman, sent 16 leaders and activists to jail. The leaders included Gangni upazila ameer Robiul Islam, nayeb-e ameer Nazmul Huda and Baitul Mal secretary Zillur Rahman.

According to court sources, the Jamaat leaders and activists were involvement in attack on law enforcers, setting polling centres on fire and other criminal activities during and before the January5 national election.

In Moulvibazar, police yesterday afternoon arrested an upazila ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami from his residence at Bahadurpur village Juri upazila headquarters, reports our correspondent.

The arrestee is Md Abdur Rahman, 52, Juri upazila Jamaat ameer.

Md Tofail Ahmed, SP in Moulvibazar, said acting on tip-off, a police team raided the Jamaat leader's houses while he along with other activists of the party were holding a 'secret' meeting at around 12:30pm.
