Police yesterday arrested a youth for his alleged involvement in stalking a class-nine student and thus driving her to commit suicide in the capital's Khilgaon two days before.

Mohammad Ziad, 22, a friend of the main accused Shimul Chandra, 22, was arrested at Nandipara in Khilgaon.

On Saturday evening, Umme Kulsum Ritu, a student of East Point Education School and College at Nandipara, killed herself by taking pesticide after being repeatedly insulted and verbally abused by local youth Shimul and his friends from near her home, said family members.

filed a case with Khilgaon Police Station accusing five people including Shimul. He would stalk her regularly on the way to school, said family members.

Though Ziad is not among the sued, police arrested him as he went to Ritu's house with Shimul on Saturday, said Officer-in-Charge Mostafiz Bhuiyan.

Shimul and others are on the run, and several police teams are looking for them, he said.

Meanwhile, students and teachers of Ritu's college and locals brought out a protest procession at Nandipara yesterday, submitted a memorandum to the Dhaka district office, and formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club, demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the stalkers.
