Detectives yesterday arrested an alleged mugger with Tk 3.99 lakh in connection with a killing and mugging incident in the capital's Khilgaon.

On Thursday night, muggers shot Sharif Hossain Simon dead and wounded his father Israil Hossain, owner of Universal Money Exchange, near Khilgaon Fire Station and took away Tk 32 lakh from them while going to their house in the area from his Motijheel office.

Kazi Sirajul Islam, 40, a resident of Khilgaon, was arrested in Khilgaon level crossing area around 3:00am and Tk 3.99 lakh recovered from his residence, said Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam of DB of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at a press briefing.

They also seized Sirajul's mobile phone with a photograph of three firearms that the criminals used in the shooting and

his private car.

Five people, including "mastermind" Sirajul, took part in the incident, said the police official but Sirajul, however, denied his involvement. The court sent him on a four-day remand.

The victim, Israil, said he could not recognise any mugger as it was dark in the area for power cut.

Investigation of the case filed with Khilgaon Police Station earlier was handed over to detectives yesterday. Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam Sheikh of the police station has been withdrawn following the incident
