Students and teachers of Joymantap High School at a human chain on the school premises in Singair upazila yesterday demanded due punishment for the person responsible for the death of Sagarika Haidar, a Class IX student of the school.

Members of the school managing committee, engineer Shahadat Hossain, chairman of Joymantap Union Parishad, and several central leaders of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and its district unit President Jahara Arzu and General Secretary Hasina Akter Jugnu also joined the two hour-long programme from 11:30am.

The speakers at the human chain programme said Sagarika and Polash, one of her classmates from a neighbouring house were gossiping at their house in

the evening of July 25, when none of her parents were present at the house.

At one stage, another neighbouring youth Abdur Razzak, 35, son of late Abdur Rashid entered Sagarika's house and hurled abuse at her in front Polash.

Failing to bear the insult, she locked a room of her house from inside and later hanged herself from the ceiling.

Lipi Haidar, mother of the deceased, filed a case with the police station against Abdur Razzak, for provoking her daughter to commit suicide, said Syeduzzaman, officer in-charge of Singair Police Station.
