A writ petition was filed with the High Court yesterday seeking its directive on the government to preserve the historical and archeological beauty of the kachharibari of poet Rabindranath Tagore at Shahjadpur in Sirajganj.

The petitioner, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, also urged the HC to direct the government to demolish the five-storey building built 10 feet away from the kachharibari, reportedly by Yarn Merchant Association.

According to the Antiquities Act, 1968, no structure can be constructed damaging natural beauty and significance of any historical and archeological site and the government is duty-bound to protect such a place as per the constitution, said the petitioner's lawyer.

The government has declared the kachharibari a historical archeological site several years ago, he added.

The HC might hear the petition on Sunday, he said.
