Boy falls off train roof, dies

An teenage boy, aged about 16, died after falling from the rooftop of a running train on Joydevpur-Bangabandhu Bridge route in Sonalia level crossing area under Basail upazila early yesterday. Gateman of the crossing Shahidul Islam said the boy died after falling from the rooftop of Dhaka-bound Sundarban Express from Khulna at 4:30am. GRP police was later informed about the matter, he said.
Abducted girl rescued

Police rescued a schoolgirl from Ghatail upazila town on Saturday night, hours after her abduction. They also arrested one ninth grader Jewel Miah, a fellow of the victim, in this connection. Fazlul Kabir, officer in-charge of Ghatail police station, said Jewel abducted the girl forTk 50,000 ransom in the afternoon. Following a GD filed by the victim's family, a police team raided the area around 10:00pm, rescued the girl and arrested Jewel. A case was filed accusing Jewel in connection with the abduction, said the OC.
14 houses gutted

At least 14 houses were gutted in fire incidents of Dinajpur and Joypurhat districts early yesterday. A fire broke out at the house of one Md Hobiz Mondal of Gudumba village under Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat at 12:30am and soon engulfed the adjoining nine houses. On information, fire fighters rushed in and doused the blaze. The loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 10 lakh, said the firefighters. The fire originated from the kitchen of Hobiz, they said. In Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur, another fire incident burnt six houses of a family at Dugdugi village in Ghoraghat upazila. Three cattle were also burnt alive. The fire also originated from the kitchen of Md Dilbar Hossain's house. The house owner claimed that the damage caused by the fire could go up to Tk 10 lakh.
BNP man's house torched

Criminals set fire to the house of a local BNP activist at Bagadiaite village in Moheshpur upazila on Saturday night. They also blasted four cocktails, leaving housewife Bithi Khatun injured. Affected house owner Shafikul Islam, son of Sobhan Uddin, former chairman of Kazirber union parishad, said the loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 2 lakh. He alleged that a group of Jubo League activists, led by former UP member Raihn Uddin, torched his house.
Housewife found dead

Police recovered the hanging body of a housewife from her house in Chhontia Bazar area under Sadar upazila of the district on Saturday night. The dead is Sabina, 25, third wife of Nazim Uddin of the area. Members of her in-laws found Sabina hanging from the ceiling of the house at 9:30pm and informed the police. The body was sent to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy. The reason behind the death would be known after getting the autopsy report, said subinspector Mahabbad Kabir.
Three kids drown

Three children, including two cousins, drowned in ponds in Nangalkot and Daudkandi upazilas yesterday morning. Locals said Jannatul Ferdous, 6, daughter of Abdus Sattar, and her cousin Samia Akhter, 7, daughter of Abdus Salam of Ghora Maidan village in Nangalkot upazila, fell into a pond near their house while they were playing on the bank around 11:00am. Taifa, one and a half years old daughter of Tarek Miah of Dhakargaon village in Daudkandi upazila, fell into a pond while she was playing beside it at around 9:00am.
One fined for illegal sand lifting

A mobile court in a drive yesterday fined a man Tk 50,000 for lifting sand from the bank of Jadukata River in Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj district illegally. The convict is Abdul Moyes, 45, son of late Abdul Rahim of Sahapur village in Jamalganj upazila. Executive Magistrate Md Solaiman led the drive.
