Jamaat leader sent to jail

A court here on Wednesday sent Ishwardi Jamaat Ameer Colam Rabbani Khan Jubayer to jail after rejecting his bail prayer. He was defeated in the recent upazila parishad election on March 23 as chairman candidate. Jubayer was accused in 17 cases including for vandalism and arson attack, said officer in-charge of Ishwardi police station Biman Kumar Das. He was absconding since long, said the OC.

Driver strangled

Police recovered the body of a CNG run auto-rickshaw driver from Karatoa River area at Gokul on Bogra-Rangpur highway on Wednesday night. The deceased is Ali, 17, son of Rezaul Karim of Amtoli in Shibganj upazila. A gang of snatchers in guise of boarded Ali's vehicle from the town and strangled him and dumped the body in the area, suspected police. They are investigating the matter, said officer in-charge (investigation) of Sadar police station Nur-e-Alam Siddiki. The body was sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the OC.

13 hurt in dash

At least 13 people, including five women, were injured in clash between two rival groups over land dispute in Chirirbandar upazila yesterday. The injured Kalipada Roy, 67, Dipak Kumar Roy Babul, 48, Koilash Chandra Roy, 45, sons of late Nrisingh Roy, Dulal Chandra Roy, 42 and Bhaskar Chandra Roy, sons of Kalipada, Hridoy Kumar Roy, 45, son of Hariprosad Chandra Roy, Ratan Kuman Roy, 44, son of Ka limohan Chandra Roy, Sandhya Rani Roy, 48, wife of Laxmi Kama Roy, Ranu Bala Roy, wife of Ratan Kuman Roy, Ganobala Roy, 35, wife of Hridoy Chandra Roy of Chhoto Baul village and Khademul Islam, 30, son of Md Joynal Abedin, Monowara Begum, 40, wife of Md Alauddin and Moktara Begum, 42, wife of Md Azizur Rahman of Mohadi village. They were admitted to the upazila health complex. Police and locals said there was a longstanding conflict between Kalipada Roy and Azizur Rahman of Chhoto Baul village over the land. As a sequel to the conflict, the supporters of the duo attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving 13 from both sides injured.

Microbus torched

Criminals torched a microbus at Ruhea village in Sadar upazila early yesterday. Locals said the gang set fire to the vehicle of one businessman Shahirul Islam parked in front of his house by pouring petrol and fled the scene. Police suspected that the incident took place due to previous enmity.

Two 'commit suicide'

Two people, including a teenage girl, allegedly committed suicide in Bochaganj upazila yesterday. The deceased are Taposhi Roy, 14, daughter of Bardhan Roy, Borthapur village and Ashraful Haque, 25, son of Abdul Haque of Krishthapur village. The two took their lives by hanging, said family members. The bodies were sent to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. However, the reason behind the suicides could not be know, said police.

13 bombs found in mosque

Police seized 13 petrol bombs from a mosque in Maniknagar area under Kolaroa upazila on Wednesday night. Munshi Mofazzal Hossain, officer in-charge of Kolaroa police station, said on information, a team seized the bombs from Maniknagar Jam-e-Masjid in an abandoned condition. However, none was arrested in this connection, said the OC.

Ten houses gutted

At least 10 houses were gutted in a fire at Porshurampur-Mulipara village under Pirganj upazila early Tuesday. Three people, including a minor boy, were also injured in the fire incident. Shahadat Hossain, acting station officer of Pirganj fire service and civil defense said the fire originated from mosquito coil at the cattle room of Golap Mian of the village at 1:30am and soon engulfed the adjoining houses. On information, fire fighters rushed in and doused the blaze after one hour of frantic efforts. The affected house owners claimed that the loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 20 lakh.

'Robber' held with arms

Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested an alleged robber along with a revolver and one bullet from Adarsha Ayesha School ground at Hujarajapur village in Sadar upazila early Wednesday. The arrestee is Anwar Hossain, son of Babar Ali, a resident of Ichhali village of the upazila. DB police sources said tipped off that a gang of robbers was preparing to commit a robbery in the area, a team of DB police launched a drive there at about 1:30 am and arrested the robber while others manged to flee.
