Parliament extends Speedy Trial Act by 5 years

The parliament yesterday extended by five years the Speedy Trial Act that deals with crimes such as extortion, vandalism and tender manipulation.

The "Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) (Amendment) Bill, 2014" was passed by voice vote four days before expiry of the current law on April 7.

This was the first act passed by the 10th parliament since it was elected in the January 5 general election. State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan moved the bill.

DU political science dept to reevaluate result discrepancy between 2 sections

In the face of protest against sharp discrepancy in the results between two sections of political science department, the Dhaka University authorities yesterday decided to reevaluate the results.

Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, said they would take necessary measures in this regard. In the March 10 master's first semester results, around 91 percent students from section-A achieved GPA 3.5 while 21 percent from B got GPA 3.5, triggering the protest by the section B students.

Army officer arrested with Phensedyl in Jamalpur

Police arrested a major of Bangladesh Army along with two civilians and recovered 51 bottles of Phensedyl from their car near a bridge at Kamalpur in Bakshiganj upazila of Jamalpur early yesterday.

The arrestees are Maj Imtiaz Nasim, posted at Chittagong's Halishahar Cantonment, and Abu Sayeed and Mamun.

On information, police intercepted their car and recovered a shopping bag containing the bottles, said Bakshiganj police. Imtiaz, who was on leave at the moment, was handed over to a team of Ghatail Cantonment. A case was filed against the civilians.

Man dies in road crash in capital Staff Correspondent

A man was killed when a covered-van hit him while he was crossing the road near the Indoor Stadium in the capital's Mirpur yesterday.

The deceased, Anwar Howlader, 30, resident of Pallabi, was a fish trader.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

Fire breaks out in city market

A fire broke out in a market burning valuables, including clothes and stationary items, of three shops in the capital's Banani last night.

Baridhara Fire Station Officer said the fire might have originated around 10:00pm from an electric short circuit in of the shops on the ground floor of three-storey Banani Super Market.

Five fire fighting units doused the blaze in an hour.
