US Senior Adviser for Burma Judith Beth Cefkin will arrive in Dhaka today on a two-day visit to Bangladesh as part of a three-nation tour to consult with international partners on Rohingya issues and other developments in neighbouring Myanmar.

She will particularly talk to senior government officials, ministers and civil society groups about US policies, the peace process, human rights, and international support to local efforts that advance reform in the Southeast Asian nation, once considered a pariah.

This will be her first visit to Bangladesh since she assumed the current role in the US State Department in September 2013, according to a media note. Officials said the US considered Bangladesh an important part towards immediate solution to Rohingya problems. Bangladesh is also considered part of mid-term and longterm solution of the Rohingya issue.

Cefkin will have a media interaction before departing for Myanmar on Monday, which she will be visiting till February 8. The US official is supposed to arrive from the UK, the first of the three countries.

According to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, there are more than 2 lakh Rohingya in Bangladesh today, including more than 30,000 documented refugees in two government-run camps in Cox's Bazar within 2km of the Myanmar border. Government's data, however, suggest that nearly another 5 lakh or more are living outside the camps.
