Workers Party of Bangladesh, an ally of the ruling Awami League, yesterday unveiled its election manifesto with a promise to establish a non-communal, democratic and poverty-free Bangladesh and strengthen the Election Commission.

The party is the second one that announced its election pledges just four days before of the forthcoming parliamentary polls slated for January 5, which is boycotted by most political parties including the main opposition BNP.

On Saturday, the AL announced its manifesto for the polls to be held in 147 constituencies, as 153 candidates out of 300 stand to be elected uncontested.

A total of 18 aspirants of the party are contesting the polls. Of them, four are contesting with the symbol "boat", electoral symbol of the AL, and the rest with the Workers Party symbol, "hammer".

Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, also minister for post and telecommunication, delivered the introductory speech, while party General Secretary Anisur Rahman Mallik announced the 24-point manifesto in the capital's Asad auditorium. Their pledges also include controlling imperialist aggressions and introducing agricultural and land reforms.
