Imam of a mosque at Nandail village of Chirirbandar upazila under the district has brought allegations of extortion, torture and illegal detention against an inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

"Md Mostaque Ahmed, an inspector of Dinajpur CID, accompanied by Md Rashid, a constable, took me to the CID office on November 20 last year and demanded Tk 1 lakh extortion money," Md Shamsul Haque, son of late Abu Bakar Siddiq of Nandail village, also imam of a local mosque, said, reading out the allegation at a press conference at Dinajpur Press Club yesterday.

"At around 7:30pm the same day, the officer took Tk 1500 from me, made me put signature on a blank paper

and let me go, saying that I would have to give the money the whole amount the next day.

"I met the officer on November 29 and gave him Tk 5,000, but he got angry as he found the amount too small. He created pressure on me to give the rest amount and later visited my home several times.

"I filed a complaint against Mostaque Ahmed to an additional inspector general of police in Dhaka on December 13 last year. Consequently, the police headquarters in Dhaka instructed Md Ahsanul Kabir, additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Dinajpur CID to investigate the matter.

"Later on May 20 this year, Mostaque again caught me in front of Dinajpur Moharaja Girijanath High School and took me to the CID office. Asking why I filed a complaint against

him, he fastened me and beat me in presence of ASP Ahsanul Kabir.

“Later they showed me arrested in case-21, dated 12.01.2013. On June 5, the CID officer took me from Dinajpur jail to their office, tortured me and handed me over to Dinajpur police court in the evening the same day.

“On June 20,1 got release on bail. On June 25,1 went to file a case with Dinajpur Kotwali police station, but they declined to register it," goes the written allegation.

When contacted, Md Mostaque Ahmed, inspector of Dinajpur CID, denied the allegation against him and said, "That man was accused in different cases."

Ahsanul Kabir, ASP of Dinajpur CID, could not be contacted for his version as he did not receive the cell phone calls made by this correspondent.
