Two electrocuted

Two people were electrocuted in Manikganj and Rangpur districts yesterday. The dead are Akhter Hossain Biswas, 55, sub-assistant agriculture officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Singair upazila of Manikganj, and Lokman Hossain, 32, of Chaorarhat area in Rangpur city, report our correspondents. Family sources said Akhter came in contact with a live electric wire while he was setting a bulb in front of a mosque in the area at noon. He died instantly. Lokman died from electrocution while he was working in a vegetable field beside his house in the morning.
Jamaat leader held

Police arrested a local Jamaat leader at Barangail under Shibalaya upazila yesterday afternoon. The arrestee is Mawlana Abdul Mazid, publicity secretary of district unit of Jamaat. Mazid was arrested on charge of planning subversive activities in the area, said Abul Kalam Azad, officer in-charge of Shibalaya Police Station.
Student killed by lightning

A student of Rangpur Begum Rokeya University was killed by lightning at Pirmahmud village in Boda upazila of Panchagarh district early yesterday. Victim Surovi Akhter, 24, daughter of Mozaffar Rahman, was a fourth year student of commuter science and engineering department. Family sources said Surovi was struck by lightning while she was asleep.
Transport strike withdrawn

An indefinite transport strike, enforced by Khagrachhari Parbatya Zila Paribahan Owners and Workers Samannoy Parishad, has been withdrawn. The strike was called off following a 'fruitful' meeting with district administration at the deputy commissioner's office on Friday evening, said KM Ismail Hossain, member secretary of the parishad. The parishad called the strike in the district on Wednesday to press home its five-point demand, including compensation for 10 vehicles that were torched and vandalised by Democratic Youth Forum during its road blockade programme on June 30.
Six gamblers arrested

Police arrested six alleged gamblers in Kamolganj upazila on Friday. The arrestees are Khokon Miah, Bedar Miah, Abul Miah, Siraj Khan, Safik Miah and Mafhi Miah of the area. On secret information, a police team raided Ramchandrapur village and arrested the gamblers, said Nihar Ranjan Nath, office in-charge of Kamalgonj Police station.
Two outlaws held

Police arrested two outlaws along with a foreign made pistol and seven bullets in Ataikula upazila early Friday. The arrestees, Abdul Khaleque, 28, and Hossain, 30, are members of outlawed PBCC-Nakshal Bahini faction. Rezaul Karim, officer in-charge of Ataikula Police Station, said law enforcers, acting on a tip-off, raided Shimulchhara village at around 2:00am and arrested the duo along with the gun and bullets.
Robbers-cops gunfight

Seven robbers were injured in a gunfight with police in Lakkhipur Char under Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj district on Friday night. Two of the injured were arrested while the rest managed to flee. The arrestees, Monir Hossain, 35, and Jowad Ali, 45, were admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital. Md Matiur Rahman, officer in charge of Kazipur Police Station, said a gang suddenly opened fire on police patrol team, prompting it to retaliate. Seven robbers were injured during the clash. Police seized a boat and four sharp weapons from the possession of the two robbers, the OC said.
