A college student of Savar Cantonment Public School and College succumbed to stab injuries in Savar's Enam Medical College Hospital yesterday following an attack by unidentified persons inside a bus.

The attackers boarded the Hanif Paribahan bus right behind the deceased Sohel Rana, 17, at Savar's Zirani Bazar bus stop around 7:00am. Sohel, whose residence is near the bus stop, was going to the college, Sohel's uncle, Sohrab Hossain, told The Daily Star.

No sooner had the bus moved 100 yards, the attackers, whose numbers could not be ascertained, came from the back of the bus and stabbed Sohel in the chest, Sohrab quoted two of Sohel's friends present during the incident.

"Sohel's friends said the bus driver immediately slowed down at Chakrabarty Tek on the Savar-Chonda Highway, near Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hospital and College, allowing the attackers to get off, and then sped up," he added.

Sohel's friends got him down at the next stop in Gazipur's Sripur and rushed him to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit where he soon died, he said.

"Sohel used to be friends with some local hooligans and he was shifted from a local school to the cantonment college to separate him from the company. Those hooligans might have been involved centring a past feud," he added.

However, Sohel's friends claimed that the bus helper might have been involved. "Sohel and his friends had beaten up the bus helper, Ismail, last Thursday following an altercation," said Sohrab.

A complaint was lodged with Ashulia Police Station and the body was sent to the hospital for autopsy.
