To get into the skin of his on-screen role of a deaf and mute youth in the forthcoming film "Barfi”, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor says he was inspired by the legendary Charlie Chaplin and the much popular TV character 'Mr. Bean'.

Directed by Anurag Basu, "Barfi” is a story of Murphy (Ranbir Kapoor), fondly known as 'Barfi' and his friendship with Tollywood actress Ileana D'Cruz and Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra), which leads to several twists and turns in his life.

Asked whether he took cue from Chaplin and Mr. Bean, Ranbir, during a promo of the film, told reporters, “Definitely that was an inspiration, but we did not copy or try to replicate it. Also, I am grandson of Raj Kapoor, so I would have little bit of that in me.”

For this character of 'Barfi', the 29-year-old actor did not have any difficulty as he followed Anurag's directions.

"When he (Anurag Basu) narrated the script, I thought I will have to do lot of work for the character and learn sign language and all. But he was very clear...he did not want an actor to show his acting abilities or method acting. He wanted it to be relatable, everyone should understand it," Ranbir said.

"So, if I am talking in sign language, you all (audience) won't understand it...so I will have to communicate in a way that you would understand this film,” he said.

Both Ranbir and Priyanka Chopra play deaf-and-mute and autistic characters respectively but insist the film is not about disability.

"One should not associate this film with disability...this film is not about disability. It is a coincidence that these two characters are deaf, mute and autistic. But one will not feel that it is a film about disability. It's about enjoying life, giving happiness, and feeling love. It’s a love story,” Ranbir said.

For her part, Priyanka said, “When we meet differently-abled people, or people who are special, we have a viewpoint that they have a dark, sorrowful life, and we generally feel bad for them. It is not a film about that. There are people who smile, laugh, fall in love and enjoy their lives.”
