National Human Rights Commission Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman has warned the government of new trends in crime, including secret killings, in the country.

He also called upon law enforcers to be more cautious about extra-judicial killings so that the country can be freed from the stigma in the New Year.

"On the last day of the year 2011,1 want to give a warning to the government, if such inhumane incidents take place in the coming year [2012], the NHRC itself will investigate the crime and make the findings public so that people can decide...,” the NHRC chief said.

He was speaking at a meeting on human rights organised by Magura lawyers association on the District Judge Court premises yesterday afternoon.

Claiming that the number of extra-judicial killings has dropped towards the end of 2011, Mizanur said, “We want law enforcers to be friends of the people and hope that in 2012 the number of extrajudicialkillings will be nil.”

Mizanur said, “Violation of human rights cannot be stopped by only government agencies, everybody has to play their role and uphold human rights.”

A cross-section of people including local freedom fighters, lawyers and journalists attended the meeting.

According to a report of Odhikar, a human rights organisation, a total of 59 people were killed in “crossfire" between January and November 2011.
