Rabindra Academy, an organisation with the aim of upholding and promoting Rabindranath Tagore's work in Bangladesh, arranged a musical programme to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of the Nobel laureate poet. The programme was held at the Main Auditorium of National Museum, Shahbagh, Dhaka on May 3. Eminent singers of the country along with Indian artistes rendered some popular Rabindra Sangeet on the occasion.
The event at National Museum was the second of three programmes by the academy to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Tagore.
A brief discussion was held prior to the musical programme. Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Abul Kalam Azad attended the programme as chief guest. Among others, Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam and M. Azizur Rahman, president and executive president of the academy respectively, and Muhammad Aziz Khan, chairman of Summit Group, delivered brief speeches at the programme.
The academy authorities hoped that with the help of thousands of Tagore enthusiasts, the
organisation would turn into a hub for researchers and musicians.
Summit Group is sponsoring all three programmes by the academy.
As chief guest, Abul Kalam Azad discussed the joint celebration of Tagore birth anniversary by the governments of Bangladesh and India. He hoped that the celebration would turn into an affair to remember for days to come.
The musical programme featured seven accomplished singers, including Sraboni Sen and Monomoy Bhattacharya (from India). The programme started with a rendition by accomplished Bangladeshi artiste Shama Rahman.
Hosted by author-writer Imdadul Haque Milon, the programme featured three songs by each singer. Mita Haque, Bulbul Islam, Nandita Yasmin and Anima Roy were the other Bangladeshi singers performing at the event.
They rendered some of the familiar Tagore songs, including “Esho Esho Amar Ghore Esho”, “Modhur Tomar", “Krishnokoli”, Ami Koto Bashonaye” and “Nidrahara Raat-er E
Dr. Minakshi Singha (India) and Syed Shabbir Hossain recited two poems at the programme as well.
