Limon Hossain, left maimed in a Rab firing, was shifted to a Barisal hospital from Jhalakathi jail for treatment yesterday.

The latest development followed National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Mizanur Rahman questioning the court decision to send the 16-year-old boy to Jhalakathi jail from the Pangu Hospital in the capital.

" Limon is an adolescent boy. Can he be sent straight to jail? If yes, then under which section of the law?" the NHRC Chairman questioned at the launching ceremony of a web portal at the Cirdap auditorium in the city.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Nusrat Jahan on Tuesday night gave the order to send Limon to jail after police produced before her the college student, who was undergoing treatment at the Pangu Hospital. The court also directed the jail authorities to arrange for Limon's treatment.

"I ask all doctors in the country how a patient is served with a release letter in the middle of the night," Mizanursaid.

The NHRC chairman wondered how a maimed patient is taken to a place far away from the city by a car instead of an ambulance.

Limon's father Tofazzal Hossain alleged that the hospital authorities discharged his son without informing them about it.

Limon was taken to a prison cell at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital under police custody shortly after 3:00am, reports our Barisal correspondent.

Babul Kumar Saha, a physician at the hospital, said Limon's condition was stable and they will continue his treatment as prescribed by the Pangu Hospital.

A team of Rab-8, led by Deputy Additional Director Lutfor Rahman, shot him in the left leg while he was on his way to bring back a herd of cattle home on March 23 at Chhaturia village in Jhalakathi. The leg had to be amputated.
