Two activists of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) were shot dead allegedly by cadres of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) at Madhyam Pab lakh ali under Baghaichhari upazila in the district yesterday afternoon.

The deceased are Mihir Baran Chakma, 50, of village Pablakhali under Baghaichhari upazila, and Enjoy Chakma, 25, of village Pakujjyachhari in the same upazila.

A group of pro-peace treaty PCJSS men waylaid some UPDF members in the area and fired on them leaving the two dead on the spot, Baghaichhari police said.

Noyeem Uddin, officer-in-charge of Baghaichhari Police Station, yesterday said police were on the way to recover the bodies.

Michel Chakma, a leader of Rangamati UPDF, blamed PCJSS for the killings and demanded arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprits.

He, however, said the victims were not UPDF activists, rather they were members of MN Larma reformist group.

Sajib Chakma, assistant publicity secretary of PCJSS central committee, denied the accusation saying the incident occurred due to internal conflict of UPDF, the group which opposed the CHT peace treaty.

PCJSS does not believe in terrorism, Sajeeb added.

Earlier Friday night, a PCJSS leader was killed allegedly by activists of UPDF at his Kalyanpur residence in the town.
