The exit of Brazil and Argentina from the World Cup robbed the enthusiasm from Bangladesh. And the somber mood was rightly reflected during yesterday's fifth round draw ceremony of The Daily Star-Rangs Toshiba World Cup Quiz held at the Sylhet Auditorium.

Although the draw was as lively as it can get in front of a packed audience, the discussions were mostly focused on the painful exit of Brazil and Argentina from the quarterfinal stage. However Sylhet showed more loyalty towards Argentina with City Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran making no secret of his choice of colour like chief guest former national footballer AlfazAhmed, whose admission of support for Argentina was greeted by the audience.

They still tried their best to win something, but lady luck was as ruthless as the Germans were as all five prizes were won by Dhaka residents, unlike the Chittagong, Rajshahi and Khulna rounds where the locals enjoyed their share of glory.

The Editor and Publisher of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam however urged the upset audience to get over the shock and try a simple winning

formula: "Read The Daily Star more, fill up more entries so that you can outnumber the readers of Dhaka."

Earlier in an enlightening speech Mahfuz Anam said, "We are flying the flags of countries far away from us. When will we be able to fly our own beloved flag in a World Cup?"

Chief guest Alfaz said that the discussion of football development only takes place after every four years when the World Cup comes, but all should come forward in a planned way if we can see our country's football at a better level, if not making it among the elite 32.

"We need enough money if we really want to improve our football. Besides we need a good management and willingness to thrive to achieve that goal", said Alfaz.

Bringing the example of cricket, Mayor Kamran said they were waiting for Bangladesh's participation in the World Cup and urged the authorities to be prepared mentally and take proper action to develop the country's football.

Rangs Industries managing director Rumee Hossain, national sports award winner and former noted goalkeeper Ranjit Das and former athlete Marian Chowdhury also graced the occasion.

Meanwhile, it was a sweeping success for Dhaka dwellers with the first prize (8 CFT Toshiba refrigerator) going to an 1CCDRB employee Zahid.

Rahul Sen, a BBA student of Dhaka University, won the second prize of Toshin 24" LCD TV.

"I have been taking part in the Daily Star-Rangs Toshiba World Cup Quiz from the second round and was confident to win at least one prize and now my dream has came true," said Rahul in his instant reaction.

Rahul, who hails from Chittagong, added that he would celebrate it with his family members after taking the prize home.

Baul Abdur Rahman enthralled the audience rendering popular songs of late Shah Abdul Karim during the lively ceremony.

Selim S H Chowdhury, production manager of the newspaper, conducted the programme while Abu Musud Bulbul, circulation manager, assisted him.

The final and bumper round of draw will be held in capital Dhaka on July 16.
