To observe the 137th death anniversary of poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta, a programme featuring discussion and recitation were held on July 5 at the Central Public Library, Shahbagh. Jatra Proshikkhan Unnayan Gobeshona Parishad (JPUGP), an organisation for jatra artistes, arranged the programme.

Jatra artiste Banoshree Adhikari presented an essay, titled "Bangla Rangomanchey Michael," at the programme. The essay highlighted Madhusudan's works that have been adapted for stage by jatra artistes and theatre activists.

Professor Ishrafil Shahin of the Department of Theatre, Dhaka University; Professor Afsar Ahmed of the Department of Drama and Dramatics, Jahangirnagar University and theatre director Golam Sarwar discussed on the essay. Taposh Sarkar, president of JPUGP, presided over the discussion.

Michael's poems were recited after the discussion. Eminent jatra artiste Milon Kanti Dey recited excerpts from the epic “Meghnadh Badh Kabya.” Dey's recitation without looking even for once at the written text amazed the audience. Later Professor Niranjan Adhikari discussed on the excerpts recited by Dey.

Michael Madhusudan Dutta passed away on June 29,1873.
