Gulshan Hossain's current solo painting and installation exhibition, titled “Save Our Trees Save Our Planet”, is now on at Goethe Institut, Dhaka. The exhibition focuses on deforestation and climate change. Fallen trees, dry twigs, branches and other aspects of plants are recurring themes in her paintings. Fragment is another feature in her works. Her space is filled up with many forms as space obtrudes in her works. Her previous exhibition was held at Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts in 2009 where nature, nostalgia and the Liberation War were the prime themes.

Hossain's ongoing exhibition is more focused on soothing colours and luxuriantly restful textures. Red, blue, yellow, ochre are predomi-

nant in her paintings. Subdued and vibrant, both shades are noticeable in her works.

As an abstract expressionist, the painter takes care of colours, forms and textures. This genre of art is technically an important precursor of surrealism, with its emphasis on spontaneous or subconscious creation. However, her forms create many images, as the paintings look very rigid. She should concentrates more on application forms.

Her "Greeneries Converted to Desert-1" denotes two fallen trees at a spacious land and the backdrop looks gloomy. Various shades and soothing textures have enriched the work.

“Effects of Deforestation on Earth-3”, another a mixed media piece, denotes a round shaped image with various colours and scattered lines.

The exhibition ends on May 24.
