State Minister for Science and ICT Yeafesh Osman yesterday stressed the need for raising the use of renewable energy to ease the power crisis.

He made the remark while addressing as chief guest at a national seminar “The Role of Renewable Energy to Address the Ongoing Energy Crisis of Bangladesh" at Dhaka University (DU).

DU Renewable Energy Research Centre in cooperation with Bangladesh Solar Energy Samity organised the seminar.

DU Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, Engineering and Technology Faculty Dean Dr Shahida Rafique, scientist Muhtasham Hossain and Bangladesh Solar Energy Samity General Secretary Prof Saiful Haque also spoke at the seminar chaired by President of the Samity Prof Mohammad Ibrahim.

Yeafesh Osman said people can mitigate the severe power crisis by installing small renewable power plants.

He said it is possible to save the country's natural gas by installing environment-friendly renewable power plants.

He called upon scientists to come up with new solutions to the power crisis to alleviate sufferings of people.

Prof Arefin said a comprehensive use of solar household systems, solar cookers, grid connections, solar wind systems and solar energy-driven irrigation pumps will lessen expensive fuel consumption.

Later, a three-day national exhibition on renewable energy was inaugurated at Mokarram Hossain Khandaker Science Building.
