Teachers, students and employees of geology and mining department of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday demanded execution of the verdict in Prof Taher Ahmed murder case.

The demand was raised at a discussion meeting in the seminar room of the department, marking the fourth death anniversary of ProfTaher

Prof Taher Ahmed, a senior teacher of the department, was murdered on February 1,2006. His body was found in a septic tank behind his residence on the campus on February 4.

Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Dr M Sultanul Islam, Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu, Dr Musfik Ahmed and some students spoke at the meeting with Prof Dr Kamrul Hassan Majumder, chairman of the department, in the chair.

The speakers paid tribute to the slain

teacher and expressed deep concern over delay in execution of the court verdict in the murder case.

They urged the government to take immediate steps to execute the case

verdict and also demanded arrest and punishment of the masterminds behind the murder.

On May22,2008, Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced RU teacher Dr Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin, caretaker at Taher's residence Jahangir Alam, his brother Abdus Salam and brother-in-law Nazmul to death for killing ProfTaher.

The tribunal judge acquitted former president of Islami Chhatra Shibir RU unit Mahbubul Alam Salehi and Jahangir's father Azimuddin Munshi of the murder charge.

Muktijoddha Santan Command, Bangabandhu Parishad, Prograssive Teachers Association, Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU), Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (SCF), Jasod Chhatra League and Chhatra Moitree in separate statements yesterday also demanded immediate execution of ProfTaher killing case verdict.
