The government should monitor the performances of the services sector to ensure the welfare of grassroots people, said the chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) yesterday.

“The government must prioritise the issues of the grassroots people, while making and implementing policy," said Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad.

"As the country is still struggling to ensure food, education and health care for all, the government should act as a regulator."

Ahmad was speaking at a workshop on privatisation of services sector, organised by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) at the auditorium of Institute of Diploma Engineers of Bangladesh in Dhaka.

“The government should act as a regulator, so it can monitor and help enhance performances of the services sector. At the same time, the services sector must ensure they make profit only after ensuring the welfare of its workers and without harming the grassroots people," Ahmad.

He also suggested the government attract investment in the manufacturing sector, as the country has a huge unemployed manpower.
