Roquaiya Hasina Neely, a well-known Tagore artiste, presented a solo performance, titled "Mon-er Majhey Je Gaan Bajey” at the central auditorium of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) on Octobers.

The artiste rendered eight Tagore songs. Of them, Amar mon-er majhey je gaan bajey," "Durey kothay,” "Kotobar bhebechhinu" and a song from Bhanu Shingher Padaboli "Moron rey t uhu momo" seemingly enthralled the audience.

After Tagore songs, Neely performed songs of three poets -- DL Roy, Atul Prasad and Rajanikant -- "Aaji gao mahageet." "Ke abar bajaye banshi" and "Jagao pothikey" respectively, followed by six odhunik songs.

The odhunik songs performed by the singer were Ei sundar swarnali sondhyae," "Nishiraat banka chaand akashey," "Ami sagorer neel" and more. Born in Birbhum, West Bengal, Neely, daughter of martyred intellectual Rashidil Hasan (a teacher of English department, Dhaka University), had her first music lesson at die age of five from Radhapada Sarker of West Bengal. She completed a five-year course in Rabindra Sangeet from Chhayanaut Sangeet Bidyayatan. Later she trained under renowned singer Ajit Roy.

This was her third solo performance in Bangladesh. The artiste's first album was released in 1988 from Canada. Her fourth album, tided "Ki Sur Jagao," was released in July2008.

Neely is an enlisted singer of both Bangladesh Betar (Radio) and BTV since 1976. Currently the artiste is an adjunct faculty at the Government Music College, Agargaon, Dhaka.

Almas Ali on violin, Gautam on labia and Daulat on Keyboard accompanied the singer at the programme.

The show was dedicated to the memory of Neely's guru, the late composer Abdul .Ahad.
