At least 10 slum dwellers, including females, were injured in an armed attack by extortionists in Baganpara slum of Rajshahi city yesterday.

Sources said, the extortionists beat up and assaulted the slum dwellers including females and looted their valuables.

Local sources said a gang of extortionists has been collecting toll from the slum people in the name of community policing for a long time as it is known as a den of drugs.

On Sunday night, the hoodlums led by Shafiqul and Nazir demanded a toll of Tk 10,000 from the slum dwellers in the name of continuing the policing system but they refused to

pay the toll money that led to an altercation between the two groups.

Following the altercation, some 30 BNP cadres led by Shariful. Mainul, Reaz, Elias, Ujjal, Ekram. Mainul attacked the slum people with hockey sticks, sharp weapons and firearms at around 2:00 pm. leaving 10 people injured.

Injured Sufla Begum, Rawshan Ara, Bazlu, Rabbul, Taiyub, Malek and Haren were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

The hooligans swooped on the slum houses and vandalised over 30 rooms, 10 television sets and other furniture.

They also opened fire and assaulted women during the attack.

The slum people lodged a complaint with Rajpara police Station.

Humayun Kabir, assistant police commissioner of Boalia zone, said police started investigation into the incident and arrested one person.
