Over 50.000 people in four upazilas in tire district were marooned as water from the rain-fed Ichhamoti and Kabodak rivers poured into the areas through breaches in embankments along their banks.

Locals said low-lying areas in Manirampur. Keshabpur, Jhikargachlia and Sharsha upazilas

went under water, as the embankments along the two rivers breach due to incessant rainfall and onrush ofwater from across the border.

Road communication between the district headquarters and the four upazila headquarters remained cut off due to the late monsoon flood.

Meanwhile, local administration has opened 30 shelters for

10,000 flood victims.

An official said 30 villages in Jhikargachha, 40 in Manirampur, 20 in Keshabpur and 15 in Sharsha upazilas were submerged by the rolling floodwater that also washed away many ghers and ponds.

Agriculture officials said standing crops on about 5,000 hectares of land were also damaged by the floodwaters.
