Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) urged the government and industry people to be more sincere for resolving labour unrest as it posed a threat to the country's foreign currency earning.

Expressing its concern over the latest spell of labour unrest, the DCCI in a press statement said measures should be taken immediately to resolve the issue in the greater interest of Bangladesh's foreign trade.

The DCCI also asked for conducting an investigation to find out the real perpetrators of the violent labour unrest.

"Many entrepreneurs are running their production units with diesel-generators, which is very expensive. As a result, the cost of doing business has also increased," said the statement.

DCCI believes that the

labour unrest has resulted from no steps of further hike in the salary of the workers.

In another development, according to our Chittagong correspondent, a 16-member Crisis Management Cell (CMC) headed by Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Ashraf Shamim has been formed at a meeting to resolve the labour unrest in Chittagong.

Representatives from BGMEA, BKMEA, Power

Development Board (PDB), workers' representatives and representatives from the law enforcing agencies were present at the meeting, held at Chittagong Circuit House.

Habibur Rahman, joint secretary to the Ministry of Labour and Employment who was also present, urged the garment owners to pay the workers' salary and bonus properly to avert any untoward incident before the Eid festival.
