A special court yesterday sentenced former Awami League (AL) lawmaker Mohammad Mohiuddin to eight years’ imprisonment for evading taxes.

Special Court-7 Judge M Sirajul Islam at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban complex pronounced die verdict against Mohiuddin, also president of Munshiganj District AL. under sections 165 and 166 of Income Tax Ordinance, 1984.

which he will have to spend a year and a half more in prison.

He was handed down three years' imprisonment for giving false information to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and another five years for concealing information in his tax returns.

Since Mohiuddin is on the run, the sentences will be effective from the day of his surrender or arrest.

NBR Deputy Tax Commissioner Mohammad Wahidullah Khan filed the case against him on June 11 for evading Tk 60.73 lakh in taxes over his income of Tk 2.44 crore in the fiscal year2003-2004.

On July 10. Mohiuddin was sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and one year's simple imprisonment for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information in his wealth statement submitted to the Anti corruptioncommission.
