The Dhaka University (DU) Syndicate in a meeting last night decided to resume classes of the university on October 28, said a press release of the DU authorities.
The Syndicate, with Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz in the chair, also decided to reopen the dormitories on October 23.
Meanwhile, the Syndicate of Jahangirnagar University (JU) in an emergency meeting yesterday decided to resume its classes on September 12 and reopen its dormitories on September 11, reports UNB. Research work, the library, transport services and all offices of DU including the dean's office, dormitory offices, and department and institute offices will resume operations from today (Sunday).
The dates for first year honours admission tests would be fixed on September 12 in the meeting of the DU General Admission Committee, added the release.
The decisions taken by the Syndicate were recommended by the Deans' Committee in its meeting held earlier in the morning yesterday.
Despite the authority's different measures to improve the situation, a number of eyewitnesses reported continued police harassment on the DU campus. The police have been prohibiting more than two people from assembling on the campus, the witnesses added.
The government on August 22 closed DU along with all educational institutions in the country for an indefinite period to pacify the nationwide violent protests that were sparked over assault on DU students by law enforcers during a soccer game at DU gymnasium ground onAugust 20.
The government also imposed curfew on six divisional cities the same evening and later formed a one-member judicial inquiry commission led by retired High Court Judge Justice Mohammad Habibur Rahman Khan to investigate the violence.
A total of 34 cases were filed by police against 82,000 unknown accused, mostly students, for their allegedinvolvement in the violence.
A statement of the DU Syndicate issued with the press release expressed great regret over the situation on the DU campus and other parts of the country on August 20 and onwards. The Syndicate condemned the violence that followed and said the assault on an army personnel as well as the arson attack on an army vehicle adjacent to the DU campus were provocative, resentful and a serious offence. The Syndicate expressed deep sympathy and compassion for the assaulted army personnel.
The Syndicate also urged the government to be compassionate and considerate toward the two respected and elderly DU teachers who had been under arrest.
Social dignity of the DU teachers is at stake and the investigation into the violence is being hindered as a few newspapers in the country are publishing confusing stories relating some DU teachers with the violence on August 20 and onwards, observed the Syndicate.
The DU authorities urged the newspapers to refrain from publishing such harmful, fabricated and ill-motivated reports of this sort. The statement of the DU Syndicate also welcomed the measures taken so far by the government to improve the situation at DU.
JU REOPENS ON SEPTEMBER 12
Jahangirnagar University (JU) will resume its classes on September 12 and reopen its dormitories on September 11, as the educational institutions are now coming back to normalcy after the recent violence, reports UNB.
The university syndicate took the decision at an emergency meeting yesterday, said a press release.
The meeting also decided that fresh schedules for the postponed examinations will be announced by the departments concerned.
The government on Monday passed the onus of reopening the country's public universities to their respective syndicates after reassessing the situation.
All public universities of the country were declared closed for an indefinite period on August 22 following violent incidents on Dhaka University campus and at some other educational institu-tionsin the country.
However, all public and private colleges in six divisional headquarters reopened yesterday.
In Rajshahi, all the departments of Rajshahi College, New Degree College, City College and Women's College reopened yesterday, but the attendance of the students was thin.
In Sylhet, all colleges, including Sylhet Osmani Medical College, Madan Mohan College, Government College, MC College and Govt Women's College resumed classes after the reopening.
However, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology will resume its academic activities on September 10 and reopen the dormitories today.
In Barisal, all government and nongovernment colleges resumed their academic activities yesterday. BM College will resume its classes today. However, Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Polytechnic Institute have not yet declared the date of reopening.
In Khulna, all colleges resumed classes yesterday but Khulna University of Engineering Technology (KUET) will reopen today. The halls of the university reopened on Friday.
All colleges reopened in Chittagong port city yesterday, but attendance of the students in the classes was poor due to heavy rain.
