A day labourer committed suicide after poisoning his five-month-old son to death in the port city in the early hours of yesterday.

The day labourer was identified as Akhter Hossain, 35, while the name of his son was Masud Hossain.

On information, police recovered the bodies at around 1:30pm and sent them to Chittagong Medical College Morgue for autopsy.

Quoting Akhter's wife Rani Begum, the investigation officer said she along with her husband and son went to bed on Thursday night and found both of them senseless after getting up in the morning.

Sources said Akhter had a serious quarrel with his wife at their house at a slum at Roufabad area under Bayezid Police Station in the early hours.

Following the quarrel that reportedly resulted from financial crisis, the poverty-stricken labourer poisoned his son to death and killed himself in the same way, they added.
